In Memoriam: Joe Simon

Joe Simon, co-creator of Captain America Comics and Young Romance, passed away this week at the ripe age of 98. My wife Crystal suggested ETC honor him by running a favorite story from COMIC BOOK COMICS, about his first big job in comics with Victor Fox, adapted, of course, from Simon's own Comic Book Makers, which he cowrote with his son Jim.

Each one of those four drawers have comics inside 'em -- they sold 600 floppies altogether!

Like a lot of people in comics, I (FVL) have accumulated quite a number of "floppies" over the years, and keep them in longboxes in my office. But here's the thing: Aesthetically, longboxes are kind of ugly.

So I was thrilled when I was invited to be a guest at the Comics Geek Speak Supershow this year and discovered there the work of CGS's own Bryan Deemer's brother Adam, who co-owns a woodworking shop in Redding PA called 2 Skinny Guys. Among other things, they construct "Comic Cubes," or wood cabinet specifically designed to hold cabinets.

They looked terrific, and when I learned they could laser engrave any image I wanted on the front, I was sold. I ordered a 600 comic-capacity "Cube," with what I thought was an appropriate Ryan Dunlavey image engraved on it; Ryan was kind enough to provide me with the line art to the cover to Comic Book Comics #2:

After about six weeks, Adam drove down from Pennsylvania to Brooklyn ("Where The Weak Are Killed And Eaten") and dropped the cabinet off today -- I can't help but show it off.

Needless to say, I'm thrilled with how the cabinet came out, and highly recommend the work of Adam and his partner Scott. Check out their web site at 2skinnyguys.com.

From the ETC Mailbag: Need More CBC Issues?

Hello Evil Twin Comics,

I have been a collector of documentary and biography comics for about 15 years and was fairly impressed with Action Philosophers and more impressed with Comic Book Comics. I'm writing to ask you to be in no hurry to wrap up the series and take your time telling the saga of comic books. Please consider doing chapters on the following events and expanding the series past 6 issues.

1. The Jim Shooter saga from his start mailing scripts to DC comics as a kid to his days at Marvel Comics Editor and his work forming Valiant, Defiant, and Broadway comics and his current writings for Dark Horse.

2. The formation of so many new companies such as Dark Horse, The Jim Shooter companies mentioned above, Image, Rebel, Northstar, Boneyard, AC, Eclipse, Eternity Apple, Caliber, Mirage with TMNT, and especially Revolutionary Comics who put out over 200 of the best biography comics ever produced. If anything suggested in this letter gets into your comics, I hope it would be a comic book bio on Revolutionary comics and the bio comics they put out.

3. The bull market comic books had after the first Batman movie in the late 80s, and the implosion of the comic book market by the mid 1990s with print runs dropping and so many companies folding or slashing production in such a short period of time. Remember all the die-cut, glow in the dark, embossed, hologram, presealed polybagged comics every fanboy had to buy at least 10 issues of? Nobody wants them now and they sit in quarter boxes for the most part currently. There were a lot of flavor of the month comics like Harbinger, Fish Police, Vampire Lestat, GI Joe, etc... that commanded a premium price at one point, but worth very little now.

4. The impact of certain artists and writers on the industry. Names that come to mind include Sergio Argonoes, Frank Miller, Jim Starlin with his Thanos/Warlock sagas, Tim Vigil with Faust, Hart Fisher, Robert Kirkman, and how everyone tried to copy Rob Liefeilds art style during his days drawing New Mutants/X-Force/Youngblood.

5. Zombie comics from the Golden age to Deadworld up to the Walking Dead and the sudden popularity they now have.

I thought this e-mail would be just a short note, but turned into a full fledged letter. Anyway, thumbs up for your efforts so far and good luck on future series. Ideas that come to mind for other bios include assassins, dictators, political scandals, covert CIA operations, religious cults, and social justice activists. How about a mini series bio on the 1999 Battle in Seattle and the WTO, or a Ralph Nader bio?

Hey Whitney, thanks for writing, and you raise some great points.

1. Shooter is a fascinating figure with a great personal story, but not one I'm sure we'll get to. He is doing a great job telling his own story over at his blog, http://www.jimshooter.com/, though.

2. & 3. are largely being covered in the history of the Direct Market that is part CBC #6, though perhaps not in the detail you're suggesting.

From a historical perspective, I'm not sure the boom of the early 90s had much to do with Burton's Batman. In fact, the general consensus of industry watchers that super hero movies move very few super hero comics (at least in the Direct Market).

In fact, the boom and bust you're talking had a lot more to do with the popular Marvel artists defecting and forming Image, and the industry shake-up/distributor collapse that followed.

4. "Comic Book Comics" has been more about broad historical trends than the specific contributions of individual creators or titles. We're avoiding a "textbook" or "tour bus" style of history where we stop briefly at every popular or impactful person. Instead, we're going for a slightly broader picture where trends and influences are more highly valued. I'm more interested in the essay form, with a distinct beginning, middle and end, than namechecking.

You didn't mention him, but nobody would argue that Chris Claremont's X-MEN isn't hugely historically significant to American comics. Thing is, I'm not sure we have much to say about it, other than, "It was the most popular comic of the 1980s and 1990s." It perfected the Marvel formula of the alienated hero in the teen team subgenre, but we already talked about that formula in our "Tales to Marvel (at)" story. That there have been successful incarnations of it since then seem, to me, a given, at least from an analytical historical perspective.

5. Hmmm. That's an intriguing idea, but I'd have to say that it's too early to gauge what the historical impact of "The Walking Dead" is going to be. "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," "Scott Pilgrim" and "Bone" are also indy B&W books that have been phenomenally successful, but they haven't necessarily spawned legions of imitators. ("Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters" not withstanding...)

You could also reasonably argue TWD's success is part of the overall zombie-mania that's swept the USA for the past decade in all media, for reasons that will no doubt spawn innumerable doctoral theses for years and years to come...

Also, as the guy who inherited "Marvel Zombies" from Kirkman, I'd feel kind of weird writing a history I'm kind of a part of ... ;)

Talking to Comics "Pirates"

For those of you who have been directed here from elsewhere and thus new to this blog and this company, hello and welcome. My name is Fred Van Lente, and among the many comics I write for Marvel, I am also writing a comic book history of the comic book industry called COMIC BOOK COMICS, illustrated by Mr. Ryan Dunlavey.

In our next issue, “The Future of Comics,” we’re looking at, among other things, the history of what’s commonly called the Direct Market (i.e. “comics shops”) and the challenge posed to it by digital distribution, both the legal kind and the less-than-legal kind: What’s commonly called “piracy,” though I know that’s a controversial term for some.

After some initial conversations on this topic with the fine folks on my Twitter feed, my Tweep @Delduwath sent me a link to “Talking to Pirates,” in which game designer Cliff Harris asked for folks who pirated his games to write in and tell him why.

The results were a fascinating read, and I thought I’d issue a similar call for folks who read scanned-in free comics: The industry and the press demonizes you a lot, and I want to hear your side of the story.

I’m not going to BS you, I am against comics “piracy” myself for a variety of reasons, but I’m not trying to pick a fight or start a flamewar. I just want to hear alternate points of view:

* Why do you read free, scanned-in comics? (Or did you used to, and if you stopped, why did you?)

* Do you avoid DRM sites like Comixology or the Company-specific apps, and if so, why?

* What do you think the comics industry could be doing better to get your business (if anything)?

* Comics piracy is often cited as a reason for declining sales – do you agree with this?

New York Comic Con and Rock Comic Con this weekend!

Evil Twin Comics will be this weekends New York Comic Con! We're set up at tables C1 and C2 in Artist Alley and will be there throughout most of the show. Unfortunately we won't have any new books to show off, but we will have some copies of our Marvel work and some special reprint editions of the long-ago sold out Comic Book Comics #1 and #2 available, along with our usual prints, artwork, Action Philosophers and Comic Book Comics merch. We can also accept credit cards at shows now, BECAUSE IT IS THE FUTURE!!! Plus Ryan will be doing sketches and explaining why Comic Book Comics #5 is so late, and Fred will be mocking him.

A real-live Action Philosopher: Plato Meramec!

Non-fiction comic books meet their live action in-ring fictional counterpart! Plato Meramec is an amateur wrestler with the in-ring persona of - you guessed it - Plato! Seeing as how we've adopted Plato as the defacto Action Philosophers mascot we were pretty excited to find out that he had a real-life modern-day counterpart when Mr Meramec got in touch with us earlier this year. This modern-day Plato (not his real name) was a student of philosophy himself, he coincidentally developed Plato as a wresting character just like we did with our comics, based on the philosopher's past career as a wrestler. Makes sense to us! We're more than happy to grant Plato Meramec the official Evil Twin Comics seal of approval, as seen here.

You may have noticed I decided to give the website a long overdue clean-up. I haven't gotten rid of anything, just rearranged it a bit to make it easier to navigate and update. I also added an RSS Feed, and a Facebook page (which we actually added a few months back but no one noticed) to make it easier to keep up with all our updates. I scaled back our web store a bit - most of the items will go to outside links from now on as filling orders in-house was taking up way too much of my time. Originally issues #3 and 4 were scheduled to be released in October 2008 and January 2009, respectively.
Comic Book Comics #3 will now arrive in January 28, 2009.

AP Vol. 3 TPB @ the printers!

Action Philosophers Giant-Size Thing Vol. 3 went to the printers this morning! Yay. This is later than we had hoped, but Ryan suffered a crippling computer crash that required us to redo a lot of the files. But we're back on track, and our final (inexpensive!) collection, this one of AP #7-9, should be hitting comics shops toward the end of November or early December, and will be available on this site not long thereafter. For those of you who absolutely can't wait, single issues of AP #9: the Lightning Round are still available, heh heh...

COMIC BOOK COMICS marches onward!

Now that AWESOME: The Indie Spinner Rack Anthology has premiered -- and special thanks to our pals Alex and Mary for hosting our launch party at Brooklyn's Rocketship and making it such a spectacular success -- Ryan and Fred can get to work to finishing the first issue of their follow-up project to AP, COMIC BOOK COMICS, the irreverent but definitive history of manga, comics and graphic novels in comic book form. (AWESOME, of course, finds the very first [albeit stand-alone] CBC installment...pick yours up at your local comic book store or the ISR gang themselves immediately if not sooner!)

We're happy to report that the boys are working hard, with Fred putting the final touches on the #2 script while Ryan is furiously finishing the art for #1 in time for the planned March '08 release date. And with the entire Van Lente and Dunlavey clans in the Washington, DC area to premiere AWESOME at this year's Small Press Expo, we made a field trip to the National Gallery of Art, where CBC subject Roy Lichtenstein donated much of his stuff. And art.
As you can see folks, Evil Twin Comics spares no expense researching our comedy non-fiction comics, as long as the research is personally convenient to us. The photo at right depicts ETC founder and resident pop artist Ryan Dunlavey (pictured with baby) with "Look Mickey", Lichtenstein's first piece of pop art.
